10 FAQs

Chlamydia  is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the UK, especially among young people (aged 16 - 25). The illness is transmitted through unprotected sex (vaginal, anal, oral, and sharing sex toys), and symptoms include vaginal/penile discharge, mild stomach ache (in women), and pain or irritation in the testicles and penis (for men).

Advice for Chlamydia Treatment

Typically, chlamydia causes no symptoms. Because you generally won't experience any physical signs, chlamydia can be stealthy.

Chlamydia  symptoms can occasionally be so subtle that individuals miss them or think they are caused by something else. One of the reasons chlamydia is such a common infection (and why it's crucial to be tested) is that most individuals don't even know they have it.

If you don't cure chlamydia, it might cause serious infections and possibly infertility. But if you identify it early, it's typically simple to treat with medication. This is why it's crucial to have frequent STD testing, regardless of how healthy you feel.

Chlamydia  symptoms
If you do have chlamydia symptoms, they may not appear for a few weeks after the infection.

Both men and women can experience chlamydia's symptoms, which include:

  • burning or aching while urinating
  • suffering during sex
  • lower stomach ache
  • unusual uterine discharge (may be yellowish and have a strong smell)
  • between periods bleeding
  • a watery or milky discharge from the penis, or pus
  • enlarged or sensitive testicles
  • Anus discomfort, discharge, and/or blood
  • Your skin around your eyes may become discoloured, itchy, or discharge if you have chlamydia infection. Occasionally, but infrequently, chlamydia infections in the throat result in pain.

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), cell culture, and other procedures can be used to identify chlamydia. The most accurate tests to utilise on easy-to-obtain specimens are NAATs. This comprises vaginal swabs, either taken by the doctor or the patient, or urine.

Vaginal swabs are the ideal specimen for an NAAT to diagnose genital  chlamydia in females. For men, urine is the preferred specimen. For women, urine works well as a substitute specimen type.

The performance of self-collected vaginal swab samples utilising NAATs is comparable to that of other approved specimens. Instead of more invasive specimen collection, patients may select self-collected vaginal swabs or urine-based screening.

The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that 131 million new cases of chlamydia infections occurred in adults and adolescents aged 15 to 49 years in 2012, with around 128 million cases previously existing. The WHO Region of the Americas and the WHO Western Pacific Region have the highest number of cases.

In 2012, there were around 17.8 million new cases for females and 7 million for men in the Americas region, adding to the approximately 18.8 million existing cases for females and 4.5 million existing cases for males. In many countries, girls aged 15-19 years have the highest prevalence of chlamydia, followed by young women aged 20-24 years.

Chlamydia infects 10-40% of patients afflicted with gonorrhoea.

Chlamydia can be contracted by unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse with a chlamydia carrier.

Even if you've had chlamydia in the past and received treatment, you can develop it again. It can also pass from mother to kid after childbirth.

Spreading Chlamydia does not require penetrative intercourse. Skin-to-skin genital contact, as well as infected sperm or vaginal fluid coming into contact with the eyes, is a well-known mechanism of spreading chlamydia.

The use of condoms correctly and consistently reduces the risk of infection during anal, vaginal, or oral sexual contact. The WHO STI guideline suggests topical ocular prophylaxis for all neonates to prevent gonococcal and chlamydial ophthalmia neonatorum (eye infection).

Approximately 70% of women and 50% of men are asymptomatic. If you do experience symptoms, they can take several forms. Women may have irregular vaginal discharge, urination pain or a burning sensation, or bleeding after sex and between periods. Men may have discharge from the penis, pain or a burning sensation while peeing, and occasionally testicular pain.

Most genital infections cure naturally without causing any health problems if left untreated, but untreated chlamydial infection can cause major complications, particularly in young women, such as inflammation of the Fallopian tubes (tube than transport eggs from the ovary to the womb). This may result in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can result in ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the womb) and infertility.

Men have fewer health issues, but the most prevalent one is inflammation of the tube that stores and transports sperm. Rarely, this can result in inability to have a child.

Repeated infection may raise the chance of consequences. Non-genital infections are also rather prevalent. Rectal infection can cause symptoms such as rectal discharge, discomfort, or blood in the faeces, although in most cases, no symptoms are present. Throat infections can induce symptoms such as throat enlargement and moderate sore throat, but these are uncommon.

Chlamydial infection during pregnancy has been associated to premature birth and low birth weight. Infants born to chlamydia-infected moms might get infected during birth, resulting in eye infection or pneumonia.

Chlamydia diagnosis requires laboratory tests. The test can be performed with a variety of materials, including urine or cotton swabs to obtain a sample of the vagina.

However, because laboratory diagnostic tests are not accessible in many countries, a skilled health care professional may treat you based on symptoms such as vaginal and urethral discharge.

There have been significant advancements in the detection of gonorrhoea, including the use of quick molecular diagnostic assays, some of which are combined with chlamydia diagnostics.

Chlamydia is almost often entirely curable with medications and normally resolves in a matter of days or weeks.

Following BASHH guidelines, our clinicians will prescribe antibiotics for Chlamydia.
