Frequently Asked Questions for Betamethasone with Clioquinol Cream

What it is

A medicated cream containing betamethasone valerate (0.1%), a strong anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, and clioquinol (3%), an antimicrobial agent with both antibacterial and antifungal properties. This is the unbranded equivalent of the discontinued Betnovate C cream, formulated for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and rashes where infection risk is high.

How it works

  • Betamethasone valerate: Reduces swelling, redness, and itching by blocking the release of substances that trigger inflammation.

  • Clioquinol: Stops the growth of bacteria and fungi, helping to treat and prevent infections that can worsen skin conditions.

How to use

  • For adults aged 18 and over.

  • Wash hands before and after use (unless treating the hands themselves).

  • Apply a thin layer over the affected skin 2–3 times daily.

  • Leave at least 30 minutes between applying this cream and any other topical product.

  • Do not use on facial skin for more than a few days unless advised by a doctor.

Possible side effects

Some people may notice:

  • Mild burning or itching at the application site

  • Raised bumps under the skin (especially in psoriasis)

Warnings & precautions

  • Do not use if allergic to any of the ingredients.

  • Avoid applying to inflamed genital or anal skin unless instructed by a doctor.

  • Use caution under airtight dressings or nappies, as this can increase absorption.

  • Can worsen certain conditions such as acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and some infections.

  • See your GP if symptoms fail to improve within a few days.
