Frequently Asked Questions for Betamethasone with Neomycin Cream

What it is

A medicated cream containing betamethasone valerate (a powerful corticosteroid) and neomycin sulphate (a broad-spectrum antibiotic). It’s the generic alternative to the discontinued Betnovate N cream and is designed for skin flare-ups like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and other inflamed conditions where infection could occur.

How it works

  • Betamethasone valerate: Helps reduce redness, itching, and swelling by stopping the skin from releasing chemicals that trigger inflammation.

  • Neomycin sulphate: Disrupts bacterial protein production, which stops bacteria from multiplying and helps clear infections.

How to use

  • Adults aged 18+ only.

  • Wash your hands before and after applying (unless treating your hands).

  • Gently spread a thin layer over the affected area once or twice a day for up to 7 days.

  • Do not use for more than 5 days on the face.

  • If using an airtight dressing, cleanse the area first, apply the cream, then cover with a fresh dressing.

  • Leave at least 30 minutes between applying this and any other topical treatments.

Possible side effects

Some people may notice:

  • Allergic skin reactions

  • Mild itching or burning sensation

  • Raised bumps under the skin (particularly with psoriasis)

Warnings & precautions

  • Avoid if you have an allergy to any ingredient.

  • Don’t apply to inflamed genital or anal areas unless a doctor advises.

  • Can make certain skin conditions worse, including acne, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and viral/fungal infections.

  • Use with caution if you have kidney issues or are treating psoriasis (requires closer monitoring).

  • Speak to your GP if symptoms don’t improve within a few days.
