What Is Flagyl?

Flagyl contains metronidazole, an antibiotic belonging to the nitroimidazole class. It is commonly used to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including bacterial vaginosis, dental infections, and certain stomach and intestinal infections.

How to Take Flagyl

Flagyl is usually prescribed as a seven-day course for bacterial vaginosis:

  • Take one 400mg tablet twice a day (every 12 hours) for 7 days (total 14 tablets).
  • Swallow tablets whole with a glass of water after food to reduce stomach discomfort.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after finishing the course, as it may cause severe reactions.

Possible Side Effects

While most people tolerate Flagyl well, some may experience side effects.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Upset stomach or diarrhoea

Warnings and Precautions

  • Have severe liver disease or are on dialysis.
  • Cannot stop drinking alcohol, as it may cause severe nausea, vomiting, and hot flushes.
