Frequently Asked Questions for Intrarosa (prasterone) 6.5mg Pessary

What Does Intrarosa Treat?

Intrarosa is specifically designed to treat vaginal and vulvar atrophy symptoms, which are common after menopause. These symptoms occur due to a decrease in oestrogen levels and may include:

  • Genital Itching
  • Vaginal Dryness
  • Painful Intercourse

By restoring vaginal cell production and lubrication, Intrarosa reduces vaginal dryness and promotes a healthy vaginal pH, allowing for improved vaginal comfort and sexual function.

How Does Intrarosa Work?

Intrarosa contains prasterone, a compound that is identical to dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which the body converts into active hormones such as oestrogens and androgens. These hormones help replenish vaginal tissues and increase lubrication by restoring oestrogen levels to pre-menopausal levels, alleviating the discomfort caused by vaginal dryness and atrophy.

How to Use Intrarosa

  • Form: Vaginal pessary (bullet-shaped)
  • How to Use: Insert one pessary into the vagina before bedtime each day using your finger or the provided applicator.
  • When to Use: Use the pessary daily or as directed by your doctor.
  • Missed Dose: If you forget to insert a pessary, do so as soon as you remember, unless the next dose is due within 8 hours.

Note: Regular check-ups with a doctor are advised, particularly for women with certain conditions. Breast screening is also recommended.

Who Can Use Intrarosa?

Intrarosa is suitable only for postmenopausal women. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 50 years old who may still require contraception. It should not be used as a contraceptive.

Do not use Intrarosa if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Allergy to prasterone or other ingredients in the pessary
  • A history or suspicion of breast or oestrogen-sensitive cancers
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, or blood clotting disorders
  • Liver disease or abnormal liver function tests

If any of these conditions arise while using Intrarosa, stop immediately and consult a doctor.

Side Effects of Intrarosa

Common side effects include:

  • Vaginal Discharge (due to fatty ingredients in the pessary)
