Losec

Losec is a medication belonging to the PPI family, specifically designed to treat issues stemming from excessive stomach acid. It’s particularly effective for managing acid reflux, gastric ulcers, and conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This treatment helps restore balance in the stomach by lowering acid levels.

The active ingredient, omeprazole, blocks the stomach’s proton pumps, which are responsible for producing acid. By reducing acid secretion, Losec relieves symptoms such as burning, regurgitation, and discomfort while promoting healing in the stomach lining.

• Take one capsule daily, preferably in the morning, as directed by your doctor.
• Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not crush, chew, or open it.
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double up.
• Follow your doctor’s instructions on dosage adjustments if required.

Common side effects (affecting up to 1 in 10 people) include:

• Headaches
• Nausea
• Stomach pain
• Constipation or diarrhoea
• Flatulence

Uncommon side effects (affecting up to 1 in 100 people) may include:

• Dizziness
• Swollen ankles or feet
• Fatigue
• Insomnia

If severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, skin rash, or black stools occur, discontinue use and seek medical help immediately.

• Do not take Losec if you are allergic to omeprazole or other PPIs.
• Avoid use if taking certain medications like nelfinavir.
• Inform your doctor if you experience unexplained weight loss, long-term stomach pain, black stools, or vomiting blood.
• Share your full medical history and current medications with your doctor to prevent potential interactions.
• Not suitable for individuals with rare hereditary issues such as galactose intolerance.
