Frequently Asked Questions for Utrogestan 200mg Vaginal Capsules

What It Is

Utrogestan 200mg capsules contain bioidentical progesterone and are designed for vaginal use as part of an HRT plan. These capsules are often recommended for women with an intact uterus to complement oestrogen therapy and minimise risks associated with oestrogen-only HRT. They can also be used as an alternative to

How It Works

During menopause, the natural levels of oestrogen and progesterone in the body decline, potentially leading to symptoms like hot flushes and mood swings. When oestrogen is taken alone, it can cause the womb lining to thicken, which increases the risk of endometrial cancer. Utrogestan counteracts this by regulating the womb lining, causing it to shed monthly, just like a menstrual period, and significantly reducing cancer risk.

How to Use

  • For women with recent periods (within the last 6–12 months): Insert 1 capsule vaginally daily from day 15 to day 26 of a 28-day cycle. This creates a monthly withdrawal bleed.
  • For postmenopausal women: Insert 1 capsule vaginally every other evening without breaks, equivalent to a daily 100mg dose.
  • Capsules should be inserted deep into the vagina, preferably at bedtime to minimise leakage and take advantage of its sedative effect.

Side Effects

While side effects are uncommon, they may include:

  • Vaginal discharge or itching
  • Vaginal bleeding or spotting
  • Sedation or drowsiness

Rare but serious side effects include symptoms of blood clots (e.g., swelling, chest pain) or signs of liver problems (e.g., jaundice). Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
