Further Information
What It Is
Vagifem is a low-dose oestrogen-only HRT containing estradiol hemihydrate, a form of oestrogen similar to the hormone naturally produced by the ovaries. It is used specifically to relieve vaginal symptoms of menopause, such as dryness, itching, and pain during intercourse. Vagifem is suitable for postmenopausal women looking for a targeted treatment that avoids the risks associated with systemic HRT.
How It Works
During menopause, oestrogen levels decrease, leading to vaginal discomfort and other symptoms. Vagifem releases a small dose of oestrogen directly into the vaginal tissue, replenishing the hormone locally. This helps alleviate dryness, irritation, and pain without significantly increasing hormone levels in the bloodstream.
How to Use
- Initial Dose: Insert 1 vaginal tablet daily for the first 2 weeks of treatment.
- Maintenance Dose: Use 1 vaginal tablet twice a week, leaving 3–4 days between each dose.
- Application: Each tablet comes pre-loaded in a single-use applicator for easy and hygienic insertion. Insert the tablet as directed in the Patient Information Leaflet.
Side Effects
While Vagifem is generally well-tolerated, some women may experience mild side effects, including:
- Headaches
- Nausea or abdominal discomfort
- Vaginal discharge or irritation
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Fluid retention or bloating
Severe side effects, such as blood clots or signs of an allergic reaction, are rare. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience symptoms like swelling, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
