7 FAQs

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. Normally, the vagina contains a balance of good (Lactobacillus) and harmful bacteria, but when harmful bacteria overgrow, BV develops. While BV is often mild, it can lead to complications in pregnancy or increase susceptibility to STIs if left untreated.

Advice for Bacterial Vaginosis

Half of women with BV do not experience symptoms, but when present, they may include:

  • Thin, grey or white vaginal discharge with a strong, fishy odour, especially after sex.
  • Burning sensation during urination.
  • Mild vaginal irritation or discomfort.
  • Itching around the vaginal area (less common).

Unlike thrush, BV does not usually cause itching or thick discharge.

Bacterial vaginosis is diagnosed through:

  • Medical history and symptom assessment.
  • Physical examination to check for abnormal discharge.
  • Vaginal pH testing – BV often increases vaginal pH above 4.5.
  • Microscopic examination – A vaginal swab sample may be tested for bacterial imbalance.

BV is often mistaken for thrush or STIs, so an accurate diagnosis is important for effective treatment.

BV is easily treated with antibiotics to restore bacterial balance in the vagina.

  • Oral Antibiotics:

    • Metronidazole (tablets or gel) – The most common and effective treatment.
    • Clindamycin (oral or vaginal cream) – Alternative option for those who cannot take metronidazole.
  • Lifestyle and Preventative Measures:

    • Avoid douching or using scented vaginal products, as they disrupt natural bacteria.
    • Use unscented soaps and wear cotton underwear to allow airflow.
    • Practice safe sex, as multiple partners can increase the risk of BV recurrence.

Most cases of BV clear within a week of treatment, but recurrent BV is common, requiring longer or repeated courses of antibiotics.

Bacterial Vaginosis FAQs (7)

Bacterial vaginosis is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. This imbalance allows harmful bacteria to overgrow, leading to symptoms like unusual discharge, a fishy odor, and irritation.

Common symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include:

  • Thin, grayish-white vaginal discharge
  • A strong, fishy odor, especially after sex
  • Vaginal itching or irritation
  • Burning during urination

The exact cause is not always clear, but BV is often triggered by factors that disrupt the natural balance of vaginal bacteria, such as:

  • Unprotected sexual activity
  • Douching
  • Antibiotic use
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., pregnancy or birth control)

BV is typically treated with antibiotics, either in the form of oral tablets or a vaginal gel. It’s important to follow the full course of treatment to prevent recurrence.

To help prevent BV:

  • Avoid douching
  • Use condoms during sex
  • Practice good hygiene, but avoid using harsh soaps or scented products in the vaginal area
  • Avoid excessive antibiotic use

Yes, untreated BV during pregnancy can increase the risk of preterm birth or low birth weight. If you're pregnant and suspect you have BV, it's essential to consult a doctor for treatment.

Yes, BV can recur after treatment, especially if risk factors like douching or multiple sexual partners are present. If symptoms return, see your doctor for further evaluation and treatment.
