Frequently Asked Questions for Imigran Nasal Spray

What Is Imigran Nasal Spray?

Imigran Nasal Spray is a prescription medication developed for treating acute migraine episodes. Migraines differ significantly from regular headaches, causing intense throbbing pain, often accompanied by sensitivity to environmental stimuli and nausea. While the exact causes of migraines remain unclear, various triggers have been identified including dietary factors (such as aged cheese, dark chocolate, and red wine), emotional states (like stress), and physical conditions (including fatigue and hunger).

How Does Imigran Nasal Spray Work?

The active component in Imigran Nasal Spray, sumatriptan, works to constrict the dilated blood vessels in the brain that are responsible for migraine pain. By narrowing these expanded vessels, sumatriptan helps alleviate the painful symptoms associated with migraines. The nasal spray should be used at the first indication of a migraine or at any point during an attack. It is important to note that Imigran Nasal Spray is not intended for preventative use or pre-emptive administration before a migraine occurs.

Administration Instructions

Imigran Nasal Spray is supplied in single-dose units containing either 10mg or 20mg of sumatriptan. The device has three main components: a nasal nozzle for insertion, a finger-grip area, and a blue plunger that delivers the medicine.

Administration steps:

  1. Clear your nasal passages if blocked
  2. Insert the nozzle into one nostril
  3. Block the opposite nostril with your finger
  4. Tilt your head back slightly and close your mouth
  5. Begin to inhale gently through your nose
  6. Whilst inhaling, press the plunger firmly to release the full dose
  7. Remove the device and dispose of it properly

Normal reactions include a slight wetness in the nose and a distinctive taste sensation in the mouth following administration.

Dosage guidelines:

  • Adults (18-65 years): One spray of 10-20mg in a single nostril
  • Adolescents (12-17 years): One spray of 10-20mg in a single nostril
  • Maximum daily dosage: Two 20mg sprays within a 24-hour period
  • Not recommended for children under 12 or adults over 65 years
