Frequently Asked Questions for Logynon
What is Logynon?
Logynon is a triphasic combined contraceptive pill containing two hormones: ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and levonorgestrel (progestogen). These hormones work together to provide effective contraception while also helping to regulate periods. Logynon is taken for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break, during which withdrawal bleeding (a period-like bleed) usually occurs. For those who prefer to take a pill every day without a break, Logynon ED is available, which includes 7 inactive pills instead of a pill-free gap.
How Does Logynon Work?
Logynon prevents pregnancy by:
- Suppressing ovulation – stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries.
- Thickening cervical mucus – making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg.
- Altering the uterine lining – reducing the likelihood of implantation if fertilisation does occur.
It is important to note that Logynon does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so additional protection, such as condoms, may be needed for STI prevention.
How to Use Logynon
Starting for the first time: Begin taking Logynon on the first day of your period for immediate protection. If starting later, use extra contraception (e.g., condoms) for 7 days.
Daily use:
Take one pill per day, following the order on the pack.
Each Logynon strip contains three different pill types:
- 6 light brown pills (lower hormone dose)
- 5 white pills (medium hormone dose)
- 10 yellow pills (higher hormone dose)
After completing the 21 active pills, have a 7-day break before starting a new pack.
