Frequently Asked Questions for Zoely
What is Zoely?
Zoely is a combined oral contraceptive pill designed to prevent pregnancy. When taken correctly, it is up to 99% effective. Each pack contains 28 tablets, with the first 24 white tablets containing two hormones – estradiol (a type of oestrogen) and nomegestrol acetate (a type of progestogen). The remaining four yellow tablets are inactive and contain no hormones.
How Does Zoely Work?
Zoely helps prevent pregnancy through three key mechanisms:
- Stops ovulation – prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg.
- Thickens cervical mucus – makes it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
- Alters the uterine lining – makes it less suitable for a fertilised egg to implant.
While Zoely is highly effective as a contraceptive, it does not work as emergency contraception.
How to Use Zoely
- Starting for the first time: Begin taking Zoely on day one of your menstrual cycle (the first day of your period) for immediate protection. If starting later, use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for the first seven days.
- Daily use:
- Take one tablet per day at the same time each day.
- Follow the sequence on the pack, taking 24 white active pills first, followed by four yellow inactive pills.
- A withdrawal bleed (period-like bleeding) may occur during the four inactive days.
- Start a new pack immediately after finishing the inactive tablets, even if your period has not finished.
Possible Side Effects of Zoely
While Zoely is generally well-tolerated, some users may experience side effects, including:
- Common: Acne, mood changes, nausea, weight changes, vaginal dryness.
- Less common but serious:
- Blood clot symptoms (e.g., swelling or pain in the leg, sharp chest pain, vision disturbances).
- Increased risk of blood clots, particularly in the first year of use or if you have risk factors such as obesity or a family history of clots.
- Irregular heartbeat or upper body discomfort.
If you notice any serious side effects or symptoms of a blood clot, seek medical attention immediately.

- You have ever had a blood clot (DVT, PE) or are at high risk of developing one.
- You have high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of stroke.
