Frequently Asked Questions for Utrogestan 100mg Capsules

What It Is

Utrogestan contains progesterone, a naturally occurring hormone, to be used in combination with oestrogen HRT. It is suitable for women with an intact uterus, helping to reduce the risk of womb cancer associated with oestrogen-only HRT.

How It Works

During menopause, declining levels of oestrogen and progesterone can lead to symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and vaginal dryness. When taken with oestrogen, Utrogestan prevents thickening of the womb lining, which can otherwise increase the risk of cancer. It mimics the body’s natural progesterone, offering effective symptom management with fewer side effects compared to synthetic alternatives.

How to Use

  • For women still having periods: Take 2 capsules daily from days 15 to 26 of a 28-day cycle.
  • For postmenopausal women: Take 1 capsule daily in the evening, continuously without breaks.
  • Capsules should be taken on an empty stomach with water to avoid increased drowsiness.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Stomach pain, nausea, or diarrhoea
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Irregular bleeding or spotting

Rare but serious side effects include symptoms of blood clots (e.g., swelling, redness, or chest pain), or signs of liver issues (e.g., jaundice). Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Do not take Utrogestan if:

    • You have a history of breast or endometrial cancer.
    • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding or blood clots.
    • You have had a stroke, heart attack, or liver disease.
  • Use with caution if you have:

    • High blood pressure, diabetes, or gallstones.
    • Migraines, asthma, or kidney/liver disorders.

HRT increases the risk of certain conditions, including blood clots, breast cancer, and stroke. Always use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration, and regularly monitor your health with your doctor.

Utrogestan should not be taken during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
