Further Information
What It Is
Zidoval is a prescription-only vaginal gel containing metronidazole, an antibiotic that treats bacterial vaginosis by eliminating the anaerobic bacteria causing the infection. It helps restore the natural balance of healthy bacteria (lactobacilli) in the vagina, which is disrupted during BV.
How It Works
Metronidazole, the active ingredient in Zidoval, is effective against anaerobic bacteria that thrive in low-oxygen environments. When applied directly to the affected area, Zidoval targets the anaerobic bacteria causing BV, stopping their growth and allowing the natural flora of the vagina to recover. This restores balance, alleviating the symptoms of BV.
Directions for Use
- Dosage: Use Zidoval once daily, preferably before bedtime, for 5 consecutive days.
- Application: Squeeze the tube to fill the applicator with 5g of the gel. Gently insert the applicator into the vagina and push the plunger to release the gel. Dispose of the applicator after each use and do not flush it.
- Frequency: Use the gel nightly for the full 5-day course.
- Additional Advice: Avoid using other vaginal products, such as tampons or creams, during treatment. Do not engage in sexual activity during treatment to reduce the risk of reinfection.
Side Effects
Most side effects are mild and rare due to the low absorption of metronidazole when used topically. However, possible side effects include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Loss of appetite
- Tingling or numbness
- Unpleasant metallic taste in the mouth
- Vaginal dryness, discomfort, or itching
- Drowsiness or dizziness
In very rare cases, you may experience more severe side effects, including:
- Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the lips, face, or throat, difficulty breathing)
- Skin rashes, fever, and other serious reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome
- Symptoms of encephalopathy (headache, confusion, difficulty speaking or moving arms and legs)
If you experience any of these symptoms, stop using Zidoval and consult a doctor immediately.
Warnings and Precautions
- Do not use Zidoval during menstruation or while you have vaginal bleeding.
- Avoid using Zidoval if you have a history of blood dyscrasias (disorders of the blood).
- Do not engage in sexual intercourse during treatment to avoid spreading the infection or irritating the vaginal lining.
- Alcohol: Do not consume alcohol while using Zidoval or for 48 hours after treatment, as this can cause a disulfiram-like reaction, which may include nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Zidoval is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, but consult your doctor before use. It is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers unless prescribed by a healthcare provider.
